A man has been arrested in connection with a single-vehicle crash that killed a man early Saturday morning in Cooper City.
According to reports at approximately 4:30 a.m. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash near Sheridan Street and Solano Avenue in Cooper City. On scene, deputies located a car split in half. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue responded and pronounced one man deceased on scene. Another man, Ivan Billie Jr. was located and transported to a local hospital with injuries listed as not life-threatening.
The preliminary investigation revealed Billie Jr. was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Camaro with a male passenger. He was traveling eastbound in the center thru lane on Sheridan Street approaching Solano Avenue.
Investigators say the Chevrolet approached another vehicle in the same lane from behind. Billie Jr. attempted to swerve around that vehicle. As the Chevrolet passed the vehicle, Billie Jr. failed to maintain control of his vehicle and veered toward the center median. The Chevrolet entered the center median striking a tree. After striking the first tree in an off-set head-on collision, the Chevrolet continued sliding across the center median striking a second tree.
Detectives say, after impacting the second tree, the Chevrolet continued across the westbound lanes in a northeastern direction where it struck a large concrete utility pole, snapping it at the base and knocking it over. After striking the pole the Chevrolet split in half and continued eastbound until it came to final rest in the westbound lanes of travel.
According to investigators, after the crash, Billie Jr. was in the center median walking away from the crash covered in blood. During the investigation it was determined the person walking away from the scene was the driver of the vehicle, which was also found to be registered to him. Billie Jr. was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
After Billie Jr. was medically cleared and released from the hospital, he was arrested and transported to BSO’s Main Jail. He faces several charges including vehicular homicide and driving under the influence resulting in death.
