A loaded handgun was found in the backpack of an elementary school student at Panther Run Elementary School in Palm Beach County on Thursday, prompting an ongoing investigation by school police and local law enforcement.
The school, located at 10775 Lake Worth Road near Wellington, remained calm and fully operational throughout the day, according to Principal Risa Suarez, who addressed the incident in a detailed statement to families and staff.
“Today, a student came forward to a trusted adult and reported that they had discovered a dangerous item in their backpack,” Suarez wrote. “School Police were immediately involved and safely recovered a loaded handgun from the student’s backpack without incident or disruption to the school day. It was not displayed or used in a threatening manner.”
Suarez emphasized that the student involved is now “subject to consequences as outlined in our Student Code of Conduct.” She added that authorities are working to determine how the student came into possession of the weapon, and the school district will pursue criminal charges as appropriate under state law, which strictly prohibits firearms on school property.
Suarez also used the opportunity to urge families to stay vigilant at home:
“This incident serves as a critical reminder for all of us. Families, we strongly encourage you to make it a regular practice to check your child’s backpack each morning. We also ask that you ensure any items in your home that should not come to school, especially weapons, are always safely and securely stored.”
She further encouraged the use of the FortifyFL app, which allows anyone to anonymously report safety concerns.
“The safety of our students and staff remains my highest priority,” Suarez said. “Because this remains an active investigation with law enforcement, I’m not able to provide additional details at this time. Thank you for your continued partnership in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment at Panther Run Elementary School.”
Authorities have not yet released the student’s age or grade level, and no injuries or threats were reported in connection with the incident.
The Palm Beach County School District continues to investigate and has reassured the school community that additional safety protocols remain in place.
