A Jamaican national, 33-year-old Demero Nelson, who has been living in Alabama, has been charged with federal offenses in South Florida after customs officers at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) allegedly discovered numerous child sexual abuse videos on his mobile phones.
Nelson was detained after arriving on a Spirit Airlines flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica, on Thursday.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, a border search of Nelson’s devices revealed several videos depicting him engaging in sexual acts with a 16-year-old girl. Investigators also found that Nelson was a member of a group chat on the messaging app Telegram, where users shared images and videos of young girls being sexually abused.
Authorities stated that Nelson admitted to viewing and receiving the illegal content. He reportedly told investigators that “he enjoyed seeing the videos and pictures of young girls.”
Nelson, a resident of Foley, Alabama, is facing charges related to the transportation and possession of child sexual abuse material. He was scheduled to appear in Fort Lauderdale federal court on Friday morning.
As of Friday, he was being held at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail, in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
