Four BCPS Schools earn top honors in Miami Heat’s How Low Can You Go? Challenge

Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is proud to announce that four schools have emerged as top winners in the Miami Heat’s annual How Low Can You Go? challenge, an exciting competition aimed at encouraging schools to reduce their energy and water consumption. The challenge, which includes schools from Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties, also serves as a platform to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability.

This year’s winners were honored for their impressive efforts to lower energy and water usage, showcasing their dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainability. BCPS students from the winning schools also received tickets to a Miami Heat game on April 13 and were celebrated with a pre-game banner presentation on the court.

Top winners in electrical consumption & energy reduction:

  1. Central Park Elementary School1st Place: The school reduced its electrical consumption by 35%, saving 187,904 kWh, and avoiding $18,790 in energy costs.

  2. Forest Hills Elementary School2nd Place: A reduction of 14% in electrical consumption resulted in savings of 47,901 kWh and a cost avoidance of $4,790.

  3. Cooper City High School3rd Place: The high school decreased its electrical consumption by 12%, saving 183,150 kWh and avoiding $18,315 in costs.

Greatest Water Reduction:

  • Coconut Creek Elementary School – This school achieved a remarkable 63% reduction in water usage, saving a total of 240,000 gallons.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn praised the students’ efforts, saying, “This competition empowers students to see firsthand the impact they can make toward environmental sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint. They are learning that they have the power to create real, positive change by reducing waste and building a more sustainable future for all. I commend our students for their focus and determination to make a difference.”

In addition to the honor of receiving tickets to the Miami Heat game, Central Park Elementary will also enjoy a special pep rally, courtesy of the Miami Heat, for winning first place overall in the competition.

The How Low Can You Go? challenge, a collaboration with the Miami Heat, has become a powerful force in encouraging students and schools to take on sustainability efforts. Over the past ten years, the program has involved more than 340 schools and impacted over 480,000 people, collectively saving millions of kilowatt-hours and gallons of water while reducing carbon emissions.
