The contribution will be used to enhance and expand the hospital’s cardiovascular program, including upgrades to the cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and hybrid catheterization labs. These improvements will allow for the integration of cutting-edge technology and the delivery of more efficient and effective cardiac treatment.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation for entrusting us with this significant investment,” said Shane Strum, President and CEO of Broward Health. “This donation will allow Broward Health to further enhance our advanced cardiovascular care and improve the lives of patients in Broward County and beyond.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Florida, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, accounting for nearly 20% of all deaths in the state. Broward Health’s cardiac team already offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, from echocardiograms and stress tests to complex catheterizations and advanced cardiac procedures.

The donation also honors the leadership of Dr. Bernardo (Bernie) Fernandez, Jr., Broward Health’s Corporate Physician Executive, for his work in shaping the hospital’s cardiovascular program.

“This donation is in recognition and support of Dr. Bernardo (Bernie) Fernandez, Jr. for his leadership and vision for the cardiovascular service line at Broward Health,” said Steve Mehallis, president of The Harry T. Mangurian Jr. Foundation. “Our community will benefit from the latest technology and state-of-the-art labs.”

The enhancements made possible by the donation are expected to improve imaging of heart and vascular structures, boost collaboration among medical professionals, increase physician recruitment, and elevate overall patient care and diagnostics.

“I am humbled by this donation in recognition of our cardiovascular service line,” said Dr. Fernandez. “With this thoughtful, generous gift, Broward Health will continue leading the way in providing patients with exceptional cardiac care and everyday excellence and fulfilling our mission to be the champion for a healthier community.”
