Broward County to conduct aerial mosquito spraying in four cities

Aerial spraying aimed at reducing the adult mosquito population will take place in parts of Southwest Ranches, Davie, Pembroke Pines, and Weston between Saturday, July 12, and Monday, July 14, 2025, according to Broward County Public Works’ Mosquito Control Section. The operation is scheduled to run between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., pending weather or other unforeseen conditions.

The decision follows a spike in service requests and surveillance data pointing to an increased presence of Psorophora species mosquitoes—also known as “gallinippers.” These large, aggressive native mosquitoes typically emerge from the Everglades after periods of heavy rainfall and are known for their painful bites. While they do not transmit diseases like Zika or dengue, their aggressive behavior and long flight range make them a considerable nuisance.

Residents with respiratory issues are advised to remain indoors during the spraying. Those who have registered with the state for pre-spray notifications will be alerted ahead of the operation.

Broward County Mosquito Control conducts treatments using backpack sprayers, trucks, and aircraft, depending on surveillance findings and public reports. Officials are also urging residents to help prevent mosquito breeding by eliminating standing water around their homes.

To request mosquito control service, call 311 or fill out a Mosquito Service Request Form.
