Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is set to honor its most outstanding educators and employees at the 2025 Caliber Awards Ceremony.
This prestigious annual event celebrates the achievements and dedication of teachers, principals, assistant principals, and school-related employees who exemplify excellence in education and service to students. The ceremony will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center.
“The Caliber Awards celebrate the visionary leaders, dedicated teachers, and innovative support staff who consistently go above and beyond,” said BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn. “These individuals inspire students, foster a love of learning, and make a lasting impact on our community.”
2025 Caliber Awards finalists
Teacher of the Year Finalists
- Lillie deCastro (William T. McFatter Technical College and High School): A 30-year veteran in education and magnet coordinator for 16 years, deCastro finds inspiration in her students’ curiosity and resilience.
- Matthew Feiler (West Broward High School): A computer science teacher of 20 years, Feiler focuses on making learning fun and fostering well-rounded education.
- Richard D. Lamarre (Miramar High School): With 10 years in education, Lamarre aims to inspire students and push them to exceed their own expectations.
- Dr. Jennifer Mehu (Park Lakes Elementary School): A first-grade teacher with 23 years of experience, Dr. Mehu finds joy in shaping future leaders.
- Deanna Waters (Sawgrass Springs Middle School): A literacy coach with 32 years in education, Waters celebrates the individuality and potential of every student.
Principal of the Year Finalists
- Luke Balchaitis (Floranada Elementary School): Under his five-year leadership, the school has consistently earned an “A” grade and ranks among the top 10 elementary schools in BCPS.
- Sheneka Blue (Oriole Elementary School): With 22 years in education, Blue led her school to its first “B” rating in 11 years while achieving remarkable academic growth.
- Vera Perkovic (Cooper City High School): A five-year principal, Perkovic’s tenure has seen the school achieve a 99% graduation rate and national recognition.
Assistant Principal of the Year Finalists
- Jerelle Robinson-Owens (Apollo Middle School): Robinson-Owens played a key role in boosting student proficiency rates from 74% to 93% in just one year.
- Shenee Tasha Rowe (Blanche Ely High School): Rowe spearheaded a turnaround that improved the school’s grade from a “D” to a “B.”
- Dr. Dana Thomson (Cross Creek School): Thomson’s efforts led to significant gains for students with emotional and behavioral disabilities, earning the school a “Maintaining” rating.
School-Related Employee of the Year Finalists
- Kathy Doku (Cresthaven Elementary School): A teacher assistant in the Head Start program known for her patience and care for the school community.
- IdaZoe Pagan (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Montessori Academy): A parent educator who fosters strong school-home connections.
- Rachel Silber (Hollywood Hills High School): A community outreach liaison who has secured vital resources for students and staff.
- Tracy-Ann Smith (Boyd Anderson High School): An office manager who collaborates on literacy programs and student success initiatives.
- Jonette Waters (Lake Forest Elementary School): A technical support specialist praised for her dedication to resolving technology challenges.
