Isat Buchanan, Vybz Kartel’s lawyer, to represent PNP in next general election

In a move that surprised few, the People’s National Party (PNP) has officially confirmed prominent attorney Isat Buchanan, known for representing dancehall artist Vybz Kartel, as its candidate for East Portland in the upcoming general election.

The announcement comes after Buchanan was seen last month at the party’s annual conference, where he appeared alongside Vybz Kartel.

While Kartel remained silent while on stage, Buchanan used the opportunity to voice his full support for PNP President Mark Golding, rallying the crowd with a message of justice and youth empowerment. “The message that I want to say is that we are fighting for the youths of this country; the future, for freedom, for justice, and the constitution… so just know that we are supporting Mark Golding 150 percent,” Buchanan declared.

In a media release on Tuesday, the PNP praised Buchanan’s commitment to the people of East Portland, highlighting his history of community service and advocacy. The party said Buchanan is ready to focus on key issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development for the constituency.

“I am honoured to represent the people of East Portland,” Buchanan said in the release, expressing his enthusiasm for the role.

Buchanan replaces Colin ‘Shaka Fame’ Bell, who resigned last month citing a lack of support. Bell had been selected in August 2023 to challenge incumbent Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament Ann-Marie Vaz.

With Buchanan’s confirmation, the PNP says it now has all 63 candidates in place as it prepares for the upcoming general election.

Up until last year, Isat Buchanan has also chaired the PNP’s Human Rights Commission.
