The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has reported a 57 percent voter turnout for special services voting, which took place on Friday ahead of the general election and local government by-elections.
According to the EOJ, 25,938 election day workers, members of the security forces, and other eligible personnel cast their ballots. A total of 45,455 special services electors were eligible to vote.
For the local government by-elections in the electoral divisions of Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens, and Denham Town, the EOJ recorded an overall turnout of 50 percent.
During the special services process, each ballot was placed into an envelope corresponding to the elector’s constituency or division. After the polls closed, the envelopes were sorted but remain sealed. The EOJ stressed that while the number of ballots received has been determined, no candidate tallies will be known until the official count on election day.
The ballots will be transferred to the returning officers for the relevant constituencies and secured at designated polling stations. They will be counted alongside ballots cast by the wider electorate on September 3.
