Schools across Jamaica are closed on Friday due to a tropical storm watch which is in effect for the island.
The Ministry of Education and Youth announced the closure, and emphasized its commitment to the well-being of students and staff, prioritizing their safety in the face of potential flooding and hazardous travel conditions.
Support for remote learning and offline alternatives
Acknowledging the disruption caused, the Ministry of Education and Youth has initiated measures to maintain educational continuity.
It has instructed all educational institutions, including public and private schools, to implement the Education in Emergency Plan.
This plan facilitates the shift to remote and online learning modalities, ensuring that teaching and learning activities persist despite the closure of physical school facilities.
In recognition of the digital divide, the ministry has made provisions for students lacking internet access or computer facilities.
These students should receive assignments through traditional means, such as workbooks or textbooks, to minimize interruptions to their educational progress.
