St. Lucia is marking the 44th anniversary of its political independence from Britain on Wednesday with traditional military parade and the government urging citizens to unite for the future socio-economic development of the country.
The celebrations are being observed under the theme “Douvan Asanm: One People. Shaping our Destiny,” and Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre said it underscores the need to move forward as one people, one nation “towards our shared destiny.
“It calls for a resolve from both government and citizens to ensure that as we develop our nation, no one should be left behind to the dreary lives of abject poverty and lacking the basic necessities of life to life in dignity and pride.”
Pierre said it is important to build a St. Lucia “where there is equal opportunity for all and the resources of the state are used to benefit the vast majority of the people since there can be no economy without people.
“The independence theme reinforces these values and principles which my government upholds and have been the guiding ethos behind our people centered government agenda of putting people first”.
In a message posted on his Facebook page, Opposition Leader, Allen Chastanet said the island’s vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, warm hospitality and excellence of its people has surely made St. Lucia an enviable and beloved country.
“But what makes our independence truly special is the strength and resilience of our people. We have overcome many challenges and setbacks, but our spirit and determination have never wavered. You continue to build a better future for yourselves and future generations, and that is something to be truly proud of.
“So on this joyous occasion…may this independence day be filled with love, laughter, and happiness, and may our nation continue to prosper and shine for many years to come.:
Among the foreign guests attending the celebrations are the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.
In a message Mitchell said, “Grenada values the bonds of friendship shared between our nations and looks forward to the strengthening of relations as we work together within the ambits of our Caribbean Community and at multilateral levels.”
Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Dr. Carla Barnett in a congratulatory message said St. Lucia “can reflect with pride on forty-four years of independence as a nation that have embodied the principles of peace, progress, and stability in a fractious world.
“The significant accomplishments of a small state in the face of daunting circumstances speak to the spirit, perseverance and strong work ethic that have come to define the people of St. Lucia.”
