Jamaica’s Ministry of Education and Youth is set to release draft policies related dress and grooming, nutrition and devotions for schools.
The announcement was made during the 59th Annual Jamaica Teachers’ Association Conference held last week Wednesday.
The Portfolio Minister, Hon. Fayval Williams, indicated that the draft policy is expected to be publicized ahead of the 2023/24 school year.
School stakeholders are encouraged to assess the policy within their own contexts and provide their insights.
A push for nutrition
In a partnership between the Ministry of Education and Youth and the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the National School Nutrition Policy and Standards was created.
Approved by the Cabinet in May 2022, its objective is to guide schools towards the promotion of proper nutrition and overall wellness.
This initiative is particularly geared towards benefitting the most susceptible students in society. With the goal of familiarizing children with healthy lifestyles and proper nutrition from a young age, the policy encourages input from various stakeholders to ensure its successful implementation.

Incorporating devotions with core values
Shifting the focus to spiritual growth, the Education Ministry has also provided guidelines pertaining to school devotions.
Minister Williams elucidated that these guidelines aim to establish a conducive atmosphere for the comprehensive growth of each student. The focus remains on promoting civility and inculcating core universal values, considered foundational for national character-building.
The minister also hinted at the presence of certain restrictions within these guidelines.
An invitation for feedback
Recognizing the importance of feedback, Williams announced that an email address would be shared, providing stakeholders a platform to express their opinions on the aforementioned policies.
