More than 50 cops in Trinidad and Tobago charged for corruption since 2022

The Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) in  Trinidad and Tobago has brought charges against a total of 55 police officers since 2022.

Reports are that Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher provided the information in a statement on Wednesday.

Her statement is in response to conversations in the public domain about corruption in the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. (TTPS)

Breakdown of alleged misconduct

According to Harewood-Christopher, out of 79 reported offences, 36 officers were implicated and charged in 2022. 

She added that up to October 25 this year, 19 officers were charged, stemming from 51 offences.

The police commissioner says the PSB was also currently investigating 109 reports of illegal activity in the TTPS.

She further shared that with over 6,500 officers in the TTPS, these numbers represent a small minority of the organization.
