Hon. Floyd Green, the Portfolio Minister, envisions a future where a growing number of individuals actively support local farmers by cultivating their crops within the confines of their homes.

Cultivating food security in every backyard

Minister Green emphasizes the need for more people to take charge of their food security through backyard gardens.

He highlights that one does not require a vast expanse of land for this endeavor, as advancements in agricultural technology now enable vertical farming and hydroponic systems.

He added that even with limited space, anyone can grow a significant portion of their dietary staples.

Speaking during a recent interview with Jamaica Information Service (JIS) on ‘Get the Facts,’ Minister Green stressed the importance of this initiative.

Access to backyard gardening kits

As part of this initiative, Jamaicans can annually access backyard gardening kits by submitting applications through the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

In 2023, over 3,000 applications were received, indicating a growing interest in backyard gardening.

Supporting backyard gardeners

Minister Green highlights the availability of various initiatives and resources to support individuals who wish to fully immerse themselves in farming.

He mentions specific programs, such as the Irish potato-growing and onion programs, where the government provides essential inputs like planting materials and fertilizers.

Additionally, technical support is offered to guide and assist aspiring farmers.

Accessing capital for agricultural pursuits

For those seeking financial support to venture into the agricultural sector, Minister Green recommends reaching out to the Agro-Investment Corporation.

He reveals plans to expand irrigation networks and establish massive agro-parks spanning hundreds of hectares in St. Catherine, Clarendon, Essex Valley, south Manchester, and south St. Elizabeth.

These initiatives provide opportunities for individuals interested in agricultural land and investment.

Diverse agro-parks for investment opportunities

The Ministry is diversifying its agro-park portfolio, including specialized areas like the mango agro-park in Clarendon and a forthcoming breadfruit agro-park.

Minister Green encourages potential investors to contact the Agro-Investment Corporation to explore these promising opportunities.
