Investigation launched into major fire at hotel in Guyana

Firefighters in Guyana are investigating what contributed to a blaze at the Ramada Princess Hotel on East Bank Demerara on Saturday night.

Reports are that the fire wreaked havoc on a significant portion of the 194-room hotel, starting from the fourth floor in room 431.

GFS’ response saves lives

Upon receiving a distress call at approximately 10:47 p.m., the Guyana Fire Services (GFS) responded to the incident. 

With 28 firefighters, equipment from two fire stations, three ambulances, and a hydraulic system, they successfully evacuated trapped guests from the sixth floor of the six-story building.

The operation was particularly urgent as the hotel was hosting guests attending the ongoing Cricket Carnival and Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Medical attention and injuries

According to reports, the ordeal led to no severe injuries or casualties.

However, one guest did require medical attention for smoke inhalation and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for treatment.

Extent of damage

In addition to room 431, where the fire originated, rooms 433 and 435 also endured considerable damage.

In the aftermath of the incident, President Irfaan Ali, Vice President Bharrat Jadgeo, and the Minister of Home Affairs visited the hotel. The government officials arrived to take stock of the situation, underscoring the gravity of the incident and its implications.
