In Guyana, the Buxton East Coast of Demerara (ECD) remained tense on Wednesday after residents blocked the main road, set fire to a truck in protest against the actions taken earlier by officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU).
There has been no official statement from the authorities on the incident, but the Commander of Regional Police Division 4 ‘C’, Khali Pareshram, told the on-line publication, NewsRoom, that the matter is related to CANU officers pursuing a suspect in the area.
He said he could provide no further details on the matter, but residents claim CANU officers fired indiscriminately during their operation.
One woman reported that bullets entered her house while she slept and other residents reported a vehicle was shot at; resulting in it crashing into a nearby trench.
As a result, the residents blocked the road and set fire to a truck. The truck driver said he had just offloaded a shipment of rice in Georgetown and was unaware of the unrest.
