Dominica is on track to complete its first geothermal power plant by December 2025, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s renewable energy development. A contract worth US$38.9 million was signed between the Dominica Geothermal Development Company Ltd and India’s Kalpataru Projects International Development Company.
Energy Minister Dr. Vince Henderson announced that “the project will involve constructing ten kilometers of transmission lines and substations from Laudat to Fond Cole.” He expressed excitement about the progress, noting that the company has started mobilizing resources, with actual construction set to begin in the coming weeks.
“Preparations for the power plant in Laudat are already underway, with a local company handling groundwork. Despite weather-related challenges and disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East affecting equipment access” Dr. Henderson shared as he remains optimistic that all necessary equipment will arrive by October.
The project received a significant boost in December 2023 when the Government of Dominica signed an agreement with Ormat Technologies Inc. from Nevada to finance, operate, and maintain the plant for 25 years. Dr. Henderson confirmed that the project remains on schedule, with hopes of commissioning the 10-megawatt plant in early 2026.
