In a significant move to enhance regional security and foster international cooperation, the Belize Defence Force (BDF) has embarked on a month-long training program in Jamaica.
This initiative, supported by the Canadian Armed Forces, brings together members of the Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard for advanced operational readiness training.
A contingent of 51 members from the Belize Defence Force and Coast Guard, led by Major Ermil Coh, recently took off from the Philip Goldson International Airport towards Jamaica.
This deployment not only signifies a deepened commitment among Caribbean nations towards mutual security but also highlights the pivotal role of international support in these endeavors, as demonstrated by the involvement of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Intensive training aims at operational excellence
The rigorous training program set to take place at the Jamaica Defence Force Moneague Training Camp, located significantly northwest of Kingston, aims to equip the Belizean contingent with essential skills for future deployments.
This initiative is particularly geared towards supporting efforts in Haiti, underlining the strategic importance of this training in the broader context of Caribbean security and cooperation.
A symbol of dedication and unity
Major Ermil Coh has articulated the contingent’s gratitude for this unique opportunity, stressing the importance of international partnerships in addressing regional security challenges.
The deployment is portrayed as a testament to Belize’s unwavering dedication to peace and stability in the Caribbean, embodying the spirit of solidarity that characterizes the relationships between nations in the region.
Canadian forces amplify training efforts in the Caribbean
In a parallel development, the Canadian Department of National Defence announced the deployment of approximately 70 Canadian Armed Forces members to Jamaica.
This move, requested by the Jamaican government, aims to prepare military personnel from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for a United Nations-sanctioned mission in Haiti.
Operation HELIOS, as it is known, focuses on imparting core peacekeeping skills and combat first aid to CARICOM troops, preparing them for the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti.
Training to fortify Haitian National police
The Canadian-led training initiative is designed to prepare approximately 330 CARICOM troops from Jamaica, Belize, and the Bahamas for deployment.
This effort seeks not only to bolster the Haitian National Police in restoring security within Haiti but also to underscore the importance of collective action and preparedness in facing security challenges within the Caribbean and beyond.
