Loop News- Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper expressed his confidence in the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) to investigate criminal matters without bias as he commented on claims that a Member of Parliament sexually assaulted a woman earlier this month.
Cooper told reporters that the claims made against his Progressive Liberal Party colleague were “some very serious allegations”.
“I’m certain that the police will investigate aggressively. We believe in the rule of law and we are confident that due process will prevail and that the police will do their jobs,” he said.
The unnamed MP was accused of sexually assaulting the woman at her home on April 4.
The woman, who shared a two-year relationship with the politician, told local publication, The Tribune that it was not the first time that he abused her.
“The relationship has been good but it’s always been verbally abusive,” she claimed. “The physical didn’t start until September or October of last year when there were two incidents where he choked me until I passed out. There was another incident where he poked me in the eye, which he said was an accident.”
She told the newspaper that the MP barged into her home on the night of the sexual assault.
“He forced me into my room, ripped off my jeans and underwear and forced himself on me. Before leaving my residence, he said to me that he came to kill us, but not enough of the family was in the yard,” she said.
The woman, who is now fearing for her life, accused police of dragging their feet in the matter.
