Taking over from Argentina, the Caribbean nation’s tenure will span from April 1 to June 30, 2024, under the leadership of Chet Neymour, the Permanent Representative of The Bahamas to the OAS.

Continuity and commitment to multilateralism

The transition of leadership unfolded during a formal ceremony, where Neymour underscored The Bahamas’ unwavering dedication to multilateralism and its pivotal role within the OAS framework.

He emphasized the significance of the Permanent Council as the guiding force behind the organization’s strategic direction, likening it to a “Board of Directors” responsible for concerted and decisive action.

Priorities for the chairmanship

Foreign Minister Frederick Mitchel articulated The Bahamas’ strategic priorities during its chairmanship tenure.

At the forefront is the promotion of climate action, with a focus on advancing actionable mandates pertaining to disaster risk reduction, integrated water management, public sector capacity building, and climate-smart skills training. Additionally, The Bahamas aims to drive discussions on reforming the international financial architecture, addressing challenges such as access to development finance, in collaboration with member states.
