Trinidad & Tobago’s natural gas sector remained heavily dominated by four major offshore producers in 2024 — bpTT, Shell, EOG Resources, and Woodside — collectively accounting for 95% of national output, according to the Energy Chamber of Trinidad & Tobago.
bpTT retained its position as the country’s largest gas producer, delivering 46% of total national production. The company, majority-owned by British energy giant bp with a minority stake held by Spanish firm Repsol, averaged 1,174 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d), or approximately 208,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d).
Shell followed as the second-largest producer with 586 mmscf/d, representing 23% of national production. U.S.-headquartered EOG Resources accounted for 14%, and Australia’s Woodside delivered 12%. Most of the gas output came from offshore fields situated off the east and north coasts of Trinidad and Tobago.
While these figures reflect the operating companies’ production levels, the Energy Chamber noted that several non-operating equity partners — including the National Gas Company and state-owned Heritage Petroleum — hold stakes in producing blocks. However, the Ministry of Energy reports output based solely on operatorship.
Among the smaller producers, DeNovo, part of the Proman Group and the only west coast gas producer, contributed 1% of national production. Heritage Petroleum, the country’s top oil producer, added just 1% of the natural gas total, with 14 mmscf/d from offshore and 2 mmscf/d from onshore fields.
Touchstone Exploration, a dual-listed Canadian and UK firm operating exclusively in Trinidad, produced 33 mmscf/d in 2024 and is in the process of acquiring Shell’s Central Block onshore field to boost future output.
Meanwhile, Perenco — an Anglo-French company known for revitalizing mature oil fields — increased its natural gas footprint significantly last year. Having acquired older bpTT assets, Perenco ended 2024 with 2% of total gas production. That figure is projected to rise sharply in 2025, as the company takes over operations at Woodside’s Angostura facility and continues to ramp up production from its existing fields.
If current trends hold, Perenco is expected to join the ranks of bpTT, Shell, and EOG as one of Trinidad & Tobago’s major gas producers by the end of 2025.
