Five reasons you should reduce your screen time

Laptops, tablets, and smartphones are vital for staying connected in today’s world. Technology has even become a fundamental requirement, as students and workers alike need it to carry out their various tasks. While they can be beneficial, they can also be harmful if used excessively. Too much screen time can negatively impact your health, whether or not you realize it.

  1. Lowers stress: Screens increase stress on your central nervous system. By taking a break from screens, you can find yourself in a better, more stable mood, with less anxiety, and depression, and even improved empathy toward others.
  2. Reduces eye strain: Blue light emitted by displays can cause eye strain, headaches, dry and itchy eyes, and blurred vision. When you take your eyes off the screen, you’ll realize that you blink more naturally, which stops your eyes from drying out and helps you maintain comfortable vision.
  3. Improves sleep habits: The blue light from your screen may interrupt your circadian rhythm and make it difficult to sleep. If you surf through social media or work on your laptop late at night, or simply watch TV before bed, your body struggles to create melatonin, which helps you fall and remain asleep. Limiting screen time, helps your body regulate your sleep schedule and get more sleep.
  4. Better focus and brain function: The use of screens impacts your attention span and your empathy levels. With excessive use of screens, you may feel less concentrated and unable to control your emotions successfully. Reduced screen time allows your brain to slow down and concentrate on things without distraction, improving your capacity to focus, manage emotions, and organize thoughts and tasks over time.
  5. Boosts your physical activity: You have less time to be physically active when you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a device. Weight gain, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and joint difficulties can all result from a lack of physical activity. Reducing screen time allows more time for physical activity, which helps keep your body healthy and reduces your chances of developing some diseases.

Try to practice taking breaks from your screen every day. Avoid using your device right before going to bed and as soon as you wake up. With these and other changes, reducing your screen time will significantly impact your health.
