Adidja Palmer, better known as Vybz Kartel is one of Jamaica’s most controversial and influential dancehall artists, whose career has been marked by a series of unforgettable moments that have left an indelible mark on the music industry and popular culture.

From chart-topping hits to legal battles and societal controversies, Kartel’s journey has been as captivating as it has been contentious. In this compilation, we delve into the top 10 moments that have defined Vybz Kartel’s career, showcasing his impact on music, fashion, and the cultural landscape of Jamaica and beyond.

1. Introduction to Dancehall: Vybz Kartel, emerged in the early 2000s as a prominent figure in the dancehall scene under the tutelage of veteran Bounty Killer. As a member of The Alliance, he quickly gained attention for his distinctive style and lyrical prowess.

2. Feuds with Ninjaman and Mavado: In 2003, Vybz Kartel engaged in a highly publicized clash with dancehall veteran Ninjaman at the annual Sting concert, solidifying his status as a formidable force in the genre, but worrying many about the violence that seemingly followed him.

A years-long feud also developed between Vybz Kartel (from “the Gaza”) and Mavado (from the Gullyside) in 2006, stemming from Vybz’s much-publicized departure from The Alliance. Their feud escalated with diss tracks and public spats, often drawing in their respective fan bases, and in some cases, leading to street violence. The police and even former Prime Minister Bruce Golding got involved, requesting that both artists show unity.

The feud died down towards the end of 2009 after the two performed together at a concert in West Kingston. But Gully/Gaza still remains a topical debate in dancehall.

3. Wedding Bells: In a surprising turn of events, dancehall icon Vybz Kartel shocked fans and the music world when news broke of his marriage in 2006 to Stacy Elliott. Kartel’s decision to tie the knot sent shockwaves through the industry for many reasons including the fact that he was still involved with his children’s mother and self-proclaimed love of his life Tanesha “Shorty” Johnson. The unexpected union marked a significant moment in the artist’s personal life, sparking speculation and intrigue among fans eager to learn more about this new chapter in the life of one of dancehall’s most enigmatic figures. The couple divorced in 2008.

Gaza Empire: Vybz Kartel’s establishment of the Gaza Empire, a collective of artists and producers including Popcaan, Black Ryno, and Tommy Lee, played a significant role in shaping dancehall’s landscape and promoting emerging talent within the genre. In true Vybz Kartel fashion, the camp was marred by controversy, and many artists ended up leaving “the Gaza.” Several of them however, including Popcaan, still credit the deejay for their rise to stardom.
