Jamaican dancehall star Shenseea is one of the artistes featured on the soundtrack for ‘The Color Purple,’ the 2023 musical drama staring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and more.
Shenseea is the featured artiste on ‘Hell No! (Reprise) [Missy Elliott remix],’ with American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino, who also acts in the film.
The song samples Dawn Penn‘s Dancehall version of You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No), released in 1993. It was produced by Stephen Bray and Nick Baxter.
The soundtrack for the new adaptation was released on Friday, December 15, via Warner Bros’ in-house label WaterTower Music.
“The Color Purple (Music From And Inspired By), the biggest R&B soundtrack in decades, boasts 17 songs from the film, 16 newly penned songs and four remixes. New songs from the collection, including Alicia Keys’ stunning Lifeline and the soulful duet from USHER & H.E.R., Risk It All, showcase how the new music has been inspired by the emotional journey experienced in the film,” a release noted.
“Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole, Coco Jones, Jorja Smith, Celeste, Mary Mary, October London and more are also featured on songs that capture the essence of the film’s message of deep family connection, resilience and unconditional love.
“Special remixes from the masters of the art, Missy Elliot featuring Megan Thee Stallion and Timbaland featuring Black Thought, elevate their signature sounds to magnify the soul of the original songs,” it added.
The 37-track effort boasts 17 timeless classics from the film alongside 16 new songs and 4 remixes. It was produced by Quincy Jones, Scott Sanders, and Larry Jackson.
Hell No! Remix is Shenseea’s second song to appear on a movie soundtrack this year. In June, she collaborated with Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers for Infamous, one of six songs released on the deluxe version of Sony’s Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse soundtrack.
