The Smurfs are making a big comeback! Paramount Pictures has released the first full trailer for the upcoming Smurfs musical film, and it’s packed with star power. Rihanna will voice Smurfette, bringing her unique flair to the iconic character. But that’s not all—Rihanna is also serving as a producer for the film and has penned original songs, adding her musical genius to the project.

“I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out,” Rihanna joked back in 2023 to tease the new film at the annual exhibitor event CinemaCon.

The upcoming Smurfs film is set to delve into themes of identity among the beloved blue characters, adding a fresh and thought-provoking layer to the classic franchise. Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, with a screenplay by Pam Brady, the film promises to be both fun and insightful.

The star-studded voice cast includes Rihanna as Smurfette, alongside Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Hannah Waddingham, Xolo Maridueña, James Corden, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman. With such a talented ensemble, the movie is bound to bring a diverse range of energy and humor to the screen.

This new musical adaptation follows the Sony Pictures film franchise, which previously featured live-action/CGI hybrids with stars like Neil Patrick Harris and Katy Perry. The Smurfs first emerged from the iconic comic books by Belgian artist Peyo, and now they’re back with a musical twist.

Peyo’s comics were “were our blueprint, also aesthetically, and then you look for opportunities within that. You have the Smurfs village, for example, this mysterious, magical place. You can reinvent it a bit or add to the lore. How did they get there? Why are they there?” Miller said at Annecy Animation Festival last year.”
According to People Magazine, the film’s synopsis teases a thrilling quest where Smurfette takes charge when Papa Smurf is mysteriously captured by the evil wizards Razamel and Gargamel. Leading her fellow Smurfs on a mission into the real world, Smurfette and her friends must uncover their true destiny in order to save Papa Smurf—and ultimately, the universe itself.

“Smurfs” will premiere in theaters on July 18.
