Jamaican dancehall artiste Kemar Highcon was on Sunday released from a Florida lock-up on a US$500 bond after being arrested and charged with grand theft auto.
He was arrested on Friday, May 5. He faces up to five years in prison if found guilty.
Grand Theft Auto is when someone takes another person’s vehicle without the owner’s permission and with the intent to deprive the owner of the vehicle permanently.
It is considered a third-degree felony in Florida. The automobile stolen should be valued between $750 and $20,000 and it can result in five years of imprisonment and a maximum fine of $5,000.
Reports are that 32-year-old Highcon, whose real name is Kemar Woodfine, was intercepted by police while driving a red, two-door 2014 BMW on West Atlantic Boulevard. The police learned that the vehicle was reported stolen after doing checks.
It is reported that the entertainer was arrested without any incident, waived his Miranda Rights, and agreed to talk to police officers.
The ‘So Saucy’ singer was charged and allegations are that he “knowingly obtained the vehicle in an attempt to temporarily or permanently deprive the victim of her property”.
Highcon is being represented by attorney at law Paul Molle. Reports are that he is expected to return to court “within the next 30 days”.
The Jamaican artiste got his breakthrough with So Saucy in 2019 and kept his momentum with the follow-up, Talk Bout.
He also landed sponsorship deals and became an ambassador for Digicel and Pizza Hut.
He is from Portmore in St Catherine, Jamaica, and attended St Jago High School in Spanish Town. He migrated to New York City in 2006.
