Former Jamaican Ambassador to the United States, Senator the Hon. Audrey Marks, was recognized with the prestigious Trailblazer Award by the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) at its 28th annual Legacy Awards Gala.
The ceremony took place in New York City and celebrated her outstanding contributions to diplomacy, service to the Jamaican diaspora, and commitment to national development.
Sen. Audrey Marks, a trailblazer in her own right, was honored as part of the Class of 2025. She made history as Jamaica’s first female Ambassador to the United States and is the only individual to have held the post for two non-consecutive terms.
Presenting the award, Don Christian, Senior Partner at PwC, praised Senator Marks for her impactful leadership in both diplomacy and business. “She created history by being Jamaica’s first female Ambassador to the USA and the only individual to have served in this role for two separate terms,” Christian said. “Her service is a testament to her dedication to the Jamaican people and her strategic vision. She has brought leadership, energy, purpose, conviction, and fun to the diaspora community, maintaining high visibility and connection and demonstrating advocacy for so many.”
AFUWI Executive Director Ann-Marie Grant also lauded Marks’ work, describing her as a role model who embodies the values of education and leadership. “Hailing from the rural parish of St. Mary in Jamaica, she deeply understands the aspirations of everyday Jamaicans and their strong desire for economic and social mobility,” Grant said. She added that Senator Marks, as a distinguished UWI alumna, “exemplifies the institution’s commitment to academic excellence by nurturing the talents of change agents, leaders, and innovators.”
In her acceptance speech, Senator Audrey Marks reflected on the role of education in shaping her journey. “When I think of my life and the impact of education that brought me forward, the award is great, but the impact is even greater,” she said. “It was an honor and privilege to be given the Trailblazer Award. We all can make a difference by supporting the foundation and investing in the next generation — they are the leaders of tomorrow.”
She also commended the AFUWI for its years of work in improving the University and supporting students.

Marks was celebrated alongside other Caribbean luminaries: William Mahfood, Chairman of the WISYNCO Group, received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Global Business Leadership and Philanthropy; UWI alum Cedric Gayle, Esq., was presented the Pelican Award; Althea Brown of LPL Financial received the Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award; Olympic gold medalist Thea LaFond Gadson received the Salute to Caribbean Gold Award; and the management and staff of Half Moon Hotel were honored with the Pinnacle Award for Excellence in Global Hospitality Services.
