Guyana is engaged in discussions with French officials to secure a vessel aimed at tackling the significant economic losses incurred due to illegal fishing activities.

President Irfaan Ali has disclosed that there are ongoing negotiations to establish a mother ship within its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and has expressed the country’s readiness to bear the associated costs.
Reports of illegal fishing
A recent report on illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing was submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture and detailed that as of 2021, there were about 19,000 vessel-days where non-Guyanese-flagged vessels were found in the country’s exclusive economic zone.
