Over 15 Jamaicans, inclusive of children, were left homeless after gunmen reportedly set a fire on a Portmore Villa in St Catherine, Jamaica on Sunday.
No injuries were reported to the police.
Armed intrusion
The Criminal Investigations Branch of Portmore revealed that around 5:30 a.m., the victims were awoken by several men, some armed with rifles and handguns.
Reports are that the men forcibly entered the premises, confiscating the residents’ mobile phones.
Following the intrusion, the invaders proceeded to douse the eight bedrooms with what is suspected to be gasoline, subsequently setting them ablaze.
The perpetrators managed to flee the scene without being apprehended.
The police and fire department were called and arrived at the scene where three properties were consumed by the flames.
Police response: Increased security measures
Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, the acting divisional commander for the St Catherine South Division, assured residents of heightened police presence in the area and appealed for their cooperation.
In light of the investigation, authorities are seeking information that could help identify the assailants.
