The commander of United States Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), General Laura Richardson, is currently on a visit to Guyana, engaging in discussions concerning the US defense partnership with Guyana and its Caribbean Community (CARICOM) counterparts.
Throughout her stay in Georgetown until Thursday, General Richardson has been meeting with key officials from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and CARICOM, according to the US Embassy.
Tradewinds Exercise
The visit coincides with Guyana’s hosting of “Tradewinds,” a multinational exercise focused on enhancing the region’s security capabilities.
The exercise aims to strengthen partnerships among participating defense and public security forces, foster international cooperation, and promote human rights.
During her time in Guyana, the US Army General’s agenda includes scheduled meetings with Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Staff of the GDF, CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr. Carla Barnett, and Ambassador Sarah-Ann Lynch.
Additionally, General Richardson will observe various events of the Tradewinds exercise and actively participate in its closing ceremony.
Richardson last met with Brigadier Khan in June during the Caribbean Nations Security Conference in Jamaica, where leaders from the Caribbean region gathered to discuss pressing matters like climate change and cyber defense.
Exploring the US-Guyana security partnership
According to the official statement, the United States and Guyana share a long-standing security partnership characterized by robust collaboration between SOUTHCOM and the GDF.
It also said that their focus areas include disaster preparedness, humanitarian assistance, maritime security, human rights, professional development, and the integration of women in peace, defense, and public security missions.
It further said that countering transnational criminal organizations is also a significant aspect of their joint efforts.
