US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, representing New York’s 8th Congressional District, recently embarked on a visit to Trinidad, describing it as a “productive and informational” experience.
Leading a bipartisan Congressional delegation, Jeffries engaged in discussions with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders, focusing on pressing economic and geopolitical matters in the region.
In a statement released on Sunday, he emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and its Caribbean neighbors, highlighting the delegation’s collaboration with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to further strengthen this historic alliance initiated by the Biden-Harris administration.
During their visit, the delegation participated in the CARICOM conference, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the regional integration movement.

Addressing Mutual Concerns
A meeting chaired by Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit provided an opportunity for the delegation and regional leaders to address various mutual concerns.
Topics of discussion included the proliferation of gun trafficking, the urgent need to tackle the climate crisis, access to banking institutions, and fostering economic development.
Jeffries also held bilateral meetings with Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
Strengthening US-Caribbean Bond
In a meeting with Trinidad and Tobago’s American Chamber of Commerce, the delegation reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing the bond between the United States and the Caribbean, emphasizing the intertwined nature of their relationship.
Geographical proximity, shared security concerns, and economic interests are key factors that contribute to the strength of the Western Hemisphere.
Jeffries concluded by expressing his determination to continue building and fortifying the bond between the United States and its Caribbean neighbors.
