Jamaican Markie Markland: An unofficial ambassador

Jovian Markland (best known as Markie Markland), who hails from Bull Bay, Jamaica, is never far from the limelight and he wouldn’t have it any other way. The serial entrepreneur, podcast host, sex shop owner, YouTuber, author, and professional model frequently courts controversy with his flamboyant lifestyle.

High Profile Figure

Markland is notable in the Jamaican consciousness for being one of the few high-profile “out” public figures. On his extremely NSFW (slang for “not safe for work”) TikTok account, which has garnered well over 100,000 followers and 1.2 million likes, the model proudly refers to themselves with slurs commonly used to put down members of the LGBTQ+ community in Jamaica.

In his book, Man Clown Days Done: Your Guide to Being a Boss Chick, Markland shares what he dubs “the ultimate guide to self-love and self-acceptance.” It contains a streak of sisterhood that Markland has fostered throughout all of his endeavors. His TikToks have been heralded as “motivational” by a number of his followers. Markland in full swing comes across like your fun-loving aunt who wants the best for you, but sometimes delivers… questionable advice.

In Jamaica for Carnival

This carnival season, the influencer and fashion icon took the streets of Kingston, Jamaica in full carnival attire. He documented part of the experience on his TikTok remarking on the progress Jamaica has made in queer tolerance.

As queer dialogue intensifies within Jamaica’s borders, Markland is both a lightning rod and at times unofficial ambassador of homosexuality due to his sheer popularity. Some hope that Markland’s increasing celebrity buoys the discourse in productive ways.
