City earns second national award for its scholastic chess initiative

Sunrise has been named Chess City of the Year for 2015 by the United States Chess Federation (US Chess). The City was selected for this prestigious honor by the Executive Board of US Chess “in recognition of the positive impact citizens have made on chess in America.”

The award comes just two months after Sunrise and Mayor Michael J. Ryan earned an Outstanding Achievement Award in the 2015 City Livability Awards Program from the U.S. Conference of Mayors – also on the strength of the City’s Scholastic Chess Initiative.

“We are incredibly proud to be recognized by the United State Chess Federation, the nation’s premier chess organization, for our City’s impact on chess,” said Mayor Ryan. “Support of scholastic chess not only provides well-known academic benefits to students, but helps weave a stronger social fabric, brings families closer together, and generates a positive multiplier impact across all social and generational lines. Our focus on scholastic chess will pay long-term dividends for students following their dreams and employers seeking the best and brightest for the daunting economic, medical, and scientific challenges we face.”

.

Sunrise joins a long list of cities recognized in the past for their commitment to chess, including Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; St. Louis, Missouri; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Miami, Florida; New York City, New York; Seattle, Washington; and San Francisco, California.
