Former prime minister of Belize Said Musa says he is retiring from active politics and as the parliamentary representative of Fort George Area constituency.
Musa, 75, who served as prime minister between 1998–2008, said he has already informed the leader of the main opposition People’s United Party (PUP), John Briceño of his decision to resign from the political arena and step aside as the PUP candidate for the Fort George Area.
Musa, the first prime minister to be elected to two consecutive terms since the country became independent in 1981, has been the area representative for the people of Fort George for more than two decades winning nine elections and losing only once
Musa, who was instrumental in negotiating independence and helped to draft the country’s constitution, took over the PUP upon the retirement of the former leader and prime minister George Price.
Musa recently suffered a mild stroke and is stepping aside as Belizeans prepare to elect a new government in November.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who has already announced his decision to step down from active politics, is yet to name a date for the polls, but political observers believe it will take place on November 4.
