Sports briefs: Windies players named to World Cup qualifier and CONCACAF Women’s Championship

Three Windies players named in World Cup qualifier

Evin Lewis, Marlon Samuels and Jason Holder are the three West Indian players been named in the cricket World Cup qualifiers team. The team was selected by an ICC panel which included cricket commentator Ian Bishop.

Lewis was the highest scoring opener in the recent international ODI tournament with 390 runs which comprised three half centuries at a batting average of 39.50.

Marlon Samuels accumulated 304 runs at an average of 43.42 with three fifties while ODI skipper Jason Holder took 15 wickets and scored 219 runs at an average of 36.50. Holder also scored his highest score in an ODI match which was 99 not out against Papua New Guinea.

The other members in the team are Brendan Taylor, Kyle Coetzer, Mohammed Nabi, Sikandar Raza, Najibullah Zadran, Safyan Sharif, Boyd Rankin and Mujeeb ur Rahman. Afghanistan and the West Indies will be heading to the World Cup next year in England and Wales. From the qualifiers, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea have been relegated to Division 2 while Nepal has gained ODI status until 2022.

USA to host CONCACAF Women’s Championship

The United States will host the 2018 edition of the CONCACAF Women’s Championship from October 4-17. They will welcome the region’s top women’s national teams for the tournament, which will crown the Confederation champion, and also qualify three teams directly to the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, and send the fourth-place finisher to an intercontinental playoff.

The tournament will include a field of eight teams. The United States, as host and defending champion, will participate alongside North American qualifiers Canada and Mexico.
