Alfonso Thomas named new bowling coach for WI senior team

Former South African quick Alfonso Thomas has been named the new bowling coach of the Windies men’s senior team.

Thomas will replace former Barbadian bowler Roddy Estwick who was relieved of the position last month in wake of the regional team’s poor performance on the New Zealand tour.  Estwick has since been added to the Windies A team set-up.

Thomas previously held specialist roles in Championship cricket in the UK. The former Somerset limited-overs captain was a very successful T20 bowler having played in the IPL, BBL and the BPL, with 263 T20 wickets to his name.

The change was the latest in a management shake-up by Cricket West Indies (CWI) who also chose former West Indies legspinner Rawl Lewis, who previously worked with the team operations manager in 2016, as the team manager.

Other changes to the staff included the addition of team physio David Kershaw and strength and conditioning coach Corey Bocking.

“We are focused on improving team performance, as well as broadening and deepening the coaching expertise in the region,” CWI director Jimmy Adams told Espncricinfo.

“We know we’ve got vital games and tournaments this year and we’re confident that these appointments will strengthen the Windies squads for this year and our future plans.”
