DUBLIN, Ireland — Hayley Matthews showcased her leadership and class with a dazzling unbeaten innings that propelled the West Indies Women to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Ireland in the opening match of the Women’s Tri-Series on Thursday.
After their bowlers dismantled the Irish batting line-up, the Caribbean side made light work of a target of 104, reaching 104 for two in just 11.3 overs to begin the tournament on a highly impressive note.
Ireland stumbles after early collapse
Asked to take first strike, Ireland never managed to establish any rhythm.
The hosts suffered a damaging start when three wickets fell during the powerplay, leaving them under severe pressure at 36 for three after six overs. Although captain Orla Prendergast and Leah Paul attempted to stabilize the innings, Ireland struggled to build partnerships capable of shifting momentum.
Prendergast led the scoring with 25, while Paul contributed 21, but the innings never truly recovered from its shaky foundation. Ireland was eventually dismissed for 103 in 17 overs.
Joseph leads relentless Windies attack
The West Indies bowlers maintained control throughout the contest, squeezing the scoring rate and forcing Ireland into risky strokes.
Left-arm spinner Qiana Joseph spearheaded the attack with a devastating spell of three wickets for eight runs from just two overs. Zaida James and Jahzara Claxton provided strong support, collecting two wickets each as Ireland’s batting order continued to crumble.
The fielding unit complemented the bowlers superbly. Sharp catching and sustained pressure ensured that opportunities were rarely missed, with eight Irish batters falling to catches as the visitors executed a disciplined all-round performance.
Brief resistance before Matthews takes over
Ireland briefly found reason for optimism during the chase.
Veteran all-rounder Deandra Dottin, appearing in her 300th international match, was dismissed for three when Ava Canning found success early. Canning struck again shortly afterward, removing Joseph for six and reducing the West Indies to 35 for two just before the conclusion of the powerplay.
Those wickets, however, would be Ireland’s final breakthroughs of the afternoon.
With the innings momentarily unsettled, Matthews stepped forward and transformed the chase into a one-sided affair.
The West Indies captain blended power with precision, punishing anything loose while rotating the strike with ease. Her innings gathered momentum rapidly, and she reached her half-century in only 34 deliveries.
Operating with complete confidence, Matthews dismantled Ireland’s attack while ensuring there were no further scares for her side.
Veteran Stafanie Taylor provided calm support at the other end, allowing the skipper to dictate the tempo and maintain complete control of proceedings.
Emphatic finish sends strong tournament message
Matthews remained unbeaten on a magnificent 82 from just 44 balls, producing one of the finest innings of the tournament so far.
By the time the winning runs were scored, the result had long been beyond doubt. The West Indies completed the chase with plenty of overs to spare, sealing a comprehensive eight-wicket triumph and delivering an early warning to the rest of the field.
With their bowlers setting the tone and their captain finishing the job in emphatic fashion, the West Indies Women could scarcely have asked for a stronger start to their Tri-Series campaign.
