The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) confirmed Friday that the Cavalier FC head coach and current chairman of its technical committee and director of the local governing body, will assume interim control of the senior men’s national team beginning December 15.

His appointment runs through March 31, 2026, covering Jamaica’s build-up and participation in the Mexico-based playoff series that will determine whether the nation advances to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A leadership change born from qualification frustration

Speid succeeds Englishman Steve McClaren, who resigned after Jamaica failed to secure automatic qualification from their CONCACAF final-round group. The Reggae Boyz’ campaign ended in disappointment with a 0-0 result against Curaçao, placing them second and forcing the playoff route.

Following internal review, the JFF board moved swiftly to install Speid, citing the need for organizational clarity and uninterrupted preparation.

JFF prioritizes continuity and calm

In its announcement, the federation emphasized that the transition aims to steady the programme rather than overhaul it.

“Following the board’s deliberation Mr. Rudolph Speid has been appointed to assume the role of head coach, effective December 15, 2025 until March 31, 2026, while we are in discussion with Miguel Coley’s agent to serve as assistant coach,” the statement read.

The JFF added that the interim structure was designed with purpose:
“President Ricketts emphasised that the interim structure is aimed at maintaining stability during this important period of Jamaica’s football. The federation is actively working through additional organisational matters, after which a formal update will be provided.”

It reiterated its ultimate objective, World Cup qualification:
“The JFF remains committed to supporting the Reggae Boyz and ensuring that the team is well positioned for success in its upcoming arrangement.”

Coley in the frame as assistant

Talks are ongoing with Coley, who served under German tactician Winfried Schaefer. Coley publicly expressed interest in the head job earlier this week, following McClaren’s resignation, and now appears poised to join Speid’s temporary staff.

Speid entered the national setup in July 2025 as McClaren’s technical adviser, contributing opponent scouting and leveraging his deep knowledge of regional football. His elevation to interim head coach had been widely anticipated.

Eyes now fixed on March

As Jamaica prepares to navigate one of the most consequential stretches in its modern football history, Speid steps into a role defined by urgency, expectation, and opportunity. Whether stability breeds success will become clear when the Reggae Boyz take the field in March.
