A Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy shot and killed a man Saturday afternoon after responding to a call that he had shot himself, officials said. The man’s mother and a deputy were also hospitalized, though neither suffered gunshot wounds.
Shortly after noon, deputies were dispatched to the 10200 block of Griffin Road regarding a man who had reportedly shot himself. BSO deputies and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue arrived on the scene to find the man injured. According to a BSO news release, when a deputy approached to assist, the man “attacked” the officer, prompting the deputy to fire. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s mother was present during the incident and, along with a deputy, was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have not provided details about the nature or extent of their injuries.
A nearby McDonald’s was cordoned off as investigators examined the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken over the investigation, a standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings, and is expected to review bodycam footage, witness statements, and other evidence.
Deputy-involved shootings remain under intense scrutiny, with investigations often taking weeks or months to conclude. BSO emphasized that its deputies acted in accordance with training protocols and that the investigation will be handled independently by FDLE.
Residents in the area were urged to avoid the scene as authorities continued their work.
