A 30-year-old mother is facing nine counts of child neglect after police discovered her children living in what they described as “deplorable conditions” inside their Miami Gardens home, according to an arrest report obtained by Local 10 News.
Ashley Lashay Jennings was taken into custody on Aug. 1 after officers responded to a report of a possible fight near the 17600 block of Northwest 36th Avenue. When they arrived, officers said they heard children fighting at a nearby home on Northwest 37th Avenue and made contact with Jennings, who was identified as the mother of all nine children.
According to the report, the children — ranging in age from 1 to 10 years old — appeared unbathed and were covered in filth. Officers noted a strong foul odor coming from the residence.
During a welfare check, police found feces and roaches on the kitchen floor, garbage covering the bedroom floors and spilling from closets, and no edible food in the refrigerator.
Investigators concluded that Jennings “willfully failed or omitted to provide the victims with the care, supervision, and services necessary,” the report stated.
Jennings was arrested and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without incident. She appeared in court on Sunday, where a judge granted her pre-trial services under the condition that she comply with a case plan from the Florida Department of Children and Families.
As of Tuesday morning, she was no longer listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade Corrections website.
