SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — It was a night of commanding power and steely resilience as the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship continued Friday at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto.
Tournament favorites, the United States, lived up to their billing with an emphatic 8-0 dismantling of Guyana, while Puerto Rico defied expectations and denied host nation Costa Rica in a hard-fought, goalless draw.
Engle unleashed: A masterclass in finishing
The Americans wasted no time asserting their dominance. Midfielder Izzy Engle produced a dazzling individual display, netting an astonishing four goals—a rare beaver trick—to headline the rout.
Engle opened her account in the 5th minute, quickly setting the tone for what would become a relentless onslaught. Kennedy Fuller added to the tally with a coolly taken penalty in the 13th minute, followed by Engle’s second strike in the 24th.
Moments later, Sealy Strawn joined the party with a swift finish in the 25th, and Linda Ullmark made it 5-0 in the 37th, leaving Guyana in disarray.
Engle completed her hat-trick with a spectacular long-range effort in the 41st minute, then delivered her fourth of the evening just after halftime in the 48th. The scoring was capped by Emma Johnson in the 77th minute, sealing an 8-0 statement victory that sent a clear message to the rest of the field.
A defensive duel: Puerto Rico stands tall against hosts
While the United States dazzled with offensive firepower, the evening’s second match offered a very different kind of drama—one rooted in grit, structure, and goalkeeper heroics.
Puerto Rico, refusing to be overwhelmed by the pressure of facing the host nation, held firm in a spirited 0-0 draw with Costa Rica. Both teams carved out promising opportunities, but defenses prevailed.
Puerto Rico nearly found the breakthrough in the 41st minute through Susana Roberts, whose effort was thwarted at the last moment. Costa Rica responded with urgency in the second half, but Alondra González missed the best chance of the match, sending her 78th-minute header over the crossbar.
The scoreless result was a testament to the discipline and shot-stopping quality of both goalkeepers. Valeria Fernández of Costa Rica and Alondra Iriarte of Puerto Rico each earned their first clean sheet of the tournament, anchoring their teams with calm and composure under pressure.
