Guyana Sets September 1, 2025 Elections Amid Venezuela Tensions

A member of the Bolivarian Militia guards a polling station during the regional elections in El Dorado, Bolivar State, Venezuela, on May 25, 2025. Venezuela will elect the governor, regional legislators, and eight deputies to the Parliament from the Essequibo, a territory of 160,000 km² whose sovereignty it has been claiming for more than a century. It is a symbolic election, as will be the authority of the elected officials, since there are no voting centers in the Essequibo, a region administered by Guyana, and the 21,403 voters live in the neighboring state of Bolivar.
