The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Accelerator Lab for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, in collaboration with the Barbados Museum and Historical Society (BMHS), will host a free community event exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) on Caribbean arts and heritage.
Set for May 16, 2025, at the Trevor Carmichael Walled Garden Theatre at the Barbados Museum, the “A.I. Symposium on Caribbean Arts & Heritage” will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event is being held as part of International Museum Day celebrations, which this year focus on the theme, “The Future of Museums.”

Supported by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) Barbados, the symposium will spark timely discussions about how A.I. is reshaping the Orange Economy — the sector tied to creative industries like arts, culture, and heritage.
Organizers say the event aims to both raise public awareness about the ways A.I. is being used in the arts and create a safe, open space to discuss the challenges and opportunities it presents, particularly within a Caribbean context.
The symposium will feature a series of thematic panels led by distinguished experts, covering key issues such as:
-
Digitizing heritage and the role of A.I. in digital archives and copyright law
-
Digital technologies and intangible cultural heritage
-
A.I.’s role in film and TV production
-
Youth, arts, education, and A.I.
-
Gender, LGBTQIA+ communities, and human rights in digital heritage interpretation
-
The future of Caribbean archaeology through A.I.
This marks the first time UNDP Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean is hosting a symposium of this kind, underscoring the urgent need for conversations around A.I.’s growing influence in cultural sectors across the region.
The event is free and open to the public. Those interested in attending must register between April 22 and May 10 via bit.ly/AICaribbeanArtsHeritage.
