Smith, the city’s first Black female police chief, made the announcement following a year-long administrative leave prompted by an investigation led by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office.

The investigation, which focused on allegations of falsified documents, ultimately cleared Smith of any criminal wrongdoing. Despite her exoneration, Smith was not reinstated to her position as chief.

In an interview with CBS Miami, Smith expressed her thoughts on the matter: “This was a private family matter and I don’t know how it connected to my performance as chief of police. But the city felt the need to suspend me.” While the decision to retire was challenging, she shared that it was made with pride.

Smith began her career with the North Miami Beach Police Department as a clerk, working her way up through the ranks as a dispatcher, officer, and ultimately chief. Reflecting on her tenure, she said, “It’s time to move on.”

Although Smith officially retired on January 2, 2025, she donned her uniform for the final time on December 5, 2023, during her suspension. The city held a heartfelt farewell ceremony for Smith on Wednesday, marking the emotional end to her career.

Throughout her time as chief, Smith implemented significant advancements within the department, including maintaining its excelsior accreditation, introducing ShotSpotter technology, and launching a mental wellness program for officers. Her leadership also saw the adoption of body-worn cameras to enhance transparency and accountability.

Deputy Chief Nelson Camacho, who served as interim chief during Smith’s suspension, praised her dedication. “She was always there, working extra hours every single day,” Camacho said. Mayor Michael Joseph also expressed his admiration, calling Smith “a prize” and lamenting the loss to the city.

Looking ahead, Smith plans to focus on her family, offer consulting services to police departments, travel, and mentor young people. She reflected on her career, expressing gratitude to her colleagues: “To the men and women I worked with for 34 years, I am grateful. I learned from them, we built friendships, relationships, and I wish them nothing but the best.”

Smith’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in North Miami Beach’s history, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, resilience, and dedication to the community.
