The 25-year-old has been shortlisted for the ICC Men’s Emerging Cricketer of the Year award, a prestigious accolade that celebrates exceptional performances from rising stars.

Joseph shares the spotlight with England’s Gus Atkinson, Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, and Pakistan’s Saim Ayub, making the competition as fierce as it is illustrious.

A breakthrough year of dazzling performances

Joseph’s meteoric rise began with a bang in January when he delivered an unforgettable performance at the Gabba in Brisbane. Despite battling a toe injury, the determined pacer claimed seven wickets in the second Test, securing West Indies’ first Test victory on Australian soil in an astounding 27 years.

In his debut Test series, Joseph’s brilliance was undeniable. The fiery fast bowler captured 13 wickets across two matches, achieving the extraordinary feat of two five-wicket hauls, including one on debut—a milestone not reached by a West Indian in 17 years.

Joseph’s success was not confined to foreign soil. He carried his momentum into home series against Bangladesh and South Africa, where his clinical bowling dismantled formidable batting line-ups. Over three matches, Joseph added 12 wickets to his growing tally, demonstrating versatility and skill that belied his youth.

Recognition among elite peers

Shamar Joseph’s nomination highlights his impact on a global stage and his potential to lead the resurgence of West Indies cricket. His journey is emblematic of the region’s deep cricketing heritage, as he competes for this honor against emerging luminaries from other cricketing powerhouses.

While the men’s category showcases a West Indies representative, the Women’s equivalent does not feature any nominees from the West Indies Women’s team. Instead, nominees include South African all-rounder Annerie Dercksen, Scotland’s Saskia Horley, India’s Shreyanka Patil, and Ireland’s Freya Sargent.

The ICC’s annual awards, which celebrate excellence across 12 individual categories, are a highlight of the cricketing calendar. Shortlists for nine of these categories will be unveiled between December 28 and 30, with the cricketing world eagerly awaiting the final announcements.
