West Indies names squad for historic U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled its dynamic Under-19 Women’s team, destined to compete in the highly anticipated ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Malaysia, scheduled from January 18 to February 2, 2025.

The tournament marks an electrifying new chapter in the history of women’s cricket in the Caribbean, showcasing the region’s brightest young talents on a global platform.

“This team symbolizes the future of West Indies cricket,” remarked CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe. “Led by the inspirational Samara Ramnath as captain and Asabi Callender as vice-captain, the squad comprises remarkable young players nurtured through our development programs. Their inclusion reflects the growing strength of women’s cricket in the Caribbean.”

Regional talent meets global stage

This prestigious tournament, featuring 16 nations, will witness fierce competition among emerging cricketing stars. While traditional powerhouses like Australia, India, and England return, new participants like Samoa and Malaysia add fresh energy to the global mix. The Caribbean squad has been diligently preparing through rigorous training sessions at Coolidge Cricket Ground and competitive tours throughout the year.

Head coach Robert Samuels lauded the team’s readiness: “Our players have worked tirelessly to sharpen their skills. We are confident they will represent the West Indies with pride and display the vibrant future of women’s cricket.”

Tournament format and fixtures

The tournament’s format promises an intense battle. Teams are divided into four groups, with West Indies joining India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia in Group A. The group stage runs from January 19 to January 23, followed by the Super 6 phase, where top teams from each group vie for semi-final spots. The grand finale is set for February 2 at the iconic Bayuemas Oval in Malaysia.

The squad embarks on their journey to Malaysia on January 1, with warm-up games against Nepal (January 13) and New Zealand (January 15) ensuring they’re battle-ready.
