Jamaica’s Consul General delivers Christmas message to the diaspora

Jamaica’s Consul General to Miami, Oliver Mair, has extended warm holiday greetings to Jamaicans and friends of the Diaspora, urging them to embrace the true spirit of Christmas as a season of hope, renewal, gratitude, and generosity.

In his annual Christmas message, Mair reflected on the meaning of the season, inspired by Noel Dexter’s timeless Christmas hymn, and reminded the community of the importance of giving thanks. “We have so much to be thankful for as we think of our rich cultural heritage and our resilience as a people,” he noted.

The Consul General highlighted Jamaica’s milestones in 2024, including the celebration of the nation’s 62nd year of independence. He expressed gratitude for the Southern USA Diaspora’s support in commemorating these achievements, which featured numerous cultural events throughout the year.

Mair also commended the Diaspora’s quick response to assist those impacted by hurricanes in the region, partnering with organizations like Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) and Food for the Poor (FFP) to provide relief. He noted the success of initiatives such as the 5K Walk/Run Jamaica Hi-5, held simultaneously across five regions under the Consulate’s jurisdiction, which received the “Best Jamaican Themed Event” award at the 25th Anniversary Awards Reception hosted by Jamaicans.com.

The Consul General also highlighted efforts to aid rural communities in Jamaica, including adopting clinics under the Ministry of Health’s initiative and building homes for indigent families in partnership with Victoria Mutual Building Society and Food for the Poor. He praised the generosity of the community in spreading holiday cheer by providing toys and sneakers to children in need, both in Jamaica and the Diaspora.

As Jamaicans across the globe celebrate the festive season, Mair encouraged them to cherish the traditions that make a Jamaican Christmas unique. “The sweet taste of sorrel, the aroma of fruit cake baking, the sumptuous serving of roasted chicken, gungo rice and peas, and the rich-flavored Jamaican eggnog are all reminders of our cultural heritage,” he said.

The Consul General concluded by wishing everyone a season of peace, joy, and prosperity, and expressed optimism for the year ahead. “Let kindness be our guide as we are reminded of the less fortunate, the elderly, the homeless, and the lonely. On behalf of the Consulate General of Jamaica at Miami, and my family, Tanya and Serena, I wish you all a Christmas season filled with love and God’s guidance for a great new year.”
