In a nail-biting showdown at Providence, Australian powerhouse Victoria edged past the Guyana Amazon Warriors by four wickets with just four balls to spare, claiming the top spot in the Global Super League after the third match of the tournament on Friday.
Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Victoria skipper Corey Anderson’s decision initially seemed audacious as Guyana’s Moeen Ali unleashed a flamboyant display. Ali’s dazzling half-century, punctuated with crisp boundaries, set the stage for a formidable total. Despite losing Roston Chase early, bowled by a fiery Jackson Smith at the end of the third over, the Warriors dominated the opening half of their innings. Ali, eventually dismissed by Smith with the stumps shattered in the 10th over, left the crowd roaring with his sublime stroke play.
Shai Hope’s steady 40 and Hassan Khan’s brisk 25 lifted the Warriors to a challenging total of 162/6. However, Victoria’s disciplined bowling attack, spearheaded by Smith, ensured the target remained within reach.
Early setbacks for Victoria
Chasing 163, Victoria found themselves in dire straits at 69/4 by the ninth over, as Imran Tahir and the Warriors’ bowlers applied relentless pressure. The home crowd erupted in jubilation, sensing an imminent victory for their team on familiar turf.
But the tide turned dramatically as Victoria’s lower order displayed incredible poise under pressure. Wicketkeeper Scott Edwards and Karima Gore, who would later claim the Player of the Match award, mounted a resilient counterattack. Their partnership brought Victoria back into contention with deft placements and timely power-hitting.
Gore’s nerves of steel
Edwards fell late in the chase, clean bowled by Tanzim Hasan Sakib, leaving the task unfinished. However, Gore, exuding remarkable calm, took the reins alongside Dominic Drakes. With just six runs needed in the final over, Gore unleashed a masterclass in finishing. Sending Dwayne Pretorius to the boundary twice in three deliveries, he sealed a remarkable victory with flair and precision.
“It was all about staying calm and backing myself,” Gore said after the match. “The team believed in me, and I’m glad I could deliver when it mattered most.”
Amazon Warriors reflect on missed opportunity
The Amazon Warriors, buoyed by their loyal fans, were left ruing missed chances. Moeen Ali’s electrifying knock and the bowlers’ early breakthroughs seemed to have handed them the advantage, only for victory to slip through their fingers.
Skipper Imran Tahir commended his team’s effort but lamented the inability to close out the game. “We had the match in our grasp but couldn’t finish. Credit to Gore and Victoria; they showed true grit,” Tahir remarked.
With all teams now having opened their Global Super League campaigns, Victoria’s win propels them to the top of the table. Their ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat establishes them as early contenders in the tournament, showcasing their depth and resilience in crunch moments.
