PUNTA CANA – The vibrant spirit of athletic solidarity was on full display as the third Panam Sports Athletes Forum culminated in Punta Cana after three intense days of dynamic presentations, inspiring discussions, and shared goals.
With over 130 attendees, 25 exhibitors, and more than 18 hours of diverse activities, the event proved to be a transformative milestone for the development of athletes’ commissions across the Americas.
Among Panam Sports’ 41 member nations, 38 now boast Athletes’ Commissions, with the remaining nations making progress toward establishing theirs. The forum underscored the importance of ensuring that every National Olympic Committee (NOC) on the continent has robust athlete representation integrated into their decision-making processes.
Panam Sports President Neven Ilic hailed the event as a resounding success, emphasizing the significant role athletes play in shaping the region’s sporting landscape. “The balance is extremely positive. We are very happy for everything that was experienced during these three days, and we hope all the athletes will transmit what they’ve learned in their respective countries. Sport in the Americas is growing, and the work of Athletes’ Commissions is becoming fundamental to this development,” Ilic stated.
He added a rallying message to the athletes: “My message to all athletes is that they continue working and that their voice continues to be heard loudly throughout the continent.”
Transformative experiences and empowering sessions
The forum addressed a wide array of topics vital to athletes’ growth and well-being, including sustainability, safe sport practices, mental health, personal branding, post-career opportunities, anti-doping, and marketing strategies. Each session was tailored to empower attendees with knowledge and tools to enhance their leadership and advocacy roles.
One of the standout moments came from Colombia’s Mariana Pajón, a double Olympic BMX gold medalist, whose presentation, “The Road to Gold Has Three Steps: Dream, Work, Enjoy,” captivated the audience. Pajón shared, “I am surprised. I never thought my presentation would thrill so many athletes. I always present it to big businessmen in Colombia, and this was the first time I addressed my peers, the athletes of the continent. I am very grateful for the opportunity Panam Sports gave me to share my life experience in this forum.”
Isabel Swan, President of the Panam Sports Athletes’ Commission and an Olympic medalist, expressed her optimism about the forum’s impact. “The athletes of the Americas are growing in terms of their Commissions. We had very beneficial days, and each presentation deeply resonated with our athletes. I am very happy as President—we are on the right track, and I know soon we will have all the Panam Sports NOCs with active Athletes’ Commissions on our continent.”
Swan’s vision reflects the forum’s broader goals: fostering a culture of leadership among athletes and ensuring their voices shape the future of sports governance.
