England’s victory secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, leaving Powell and his squad searching for solutions ahead of the final two games.
Speaking in the aftermath of Thursday’s defeat, Powell did not mince words about the team’s batting frailties, particularly their recurring inability to sustain innings. “I think it’s a bit disappointing,” Powell admitted, reflecting on the repeated pattern of losing wickets in clusters. “We keep losing wickets in clusters and in the power play. It’s a case of us being our natural selves.”
The West Indies’ top-order woes left them struggling to gain momentum, creating undue pressure on the middle-order batsmen. Powell elaborated, “The middle overs get difficult when you lose wickets, and what happens is that you can’t go hard in the middle overs when you lose wickets.”
Improvements with the ball, but fielding falters
While the team’s bowling unit showed glimpses of improvement, Powell underscored the need for consistent execution. “The execution by the bowlers wasn’t proper in the previous games, but tonight, the execution was better,” he remarked, acknowledging the positive strides made during the latest match.
However, it was in the field where cracks began to show, with sloppy catches and missed opportunities proving costly. Powell was candid about the need for improvement in this area, urging his players to take greater ownership. “The guys have to take more catches. Fielding is a collective effort, and we need to get better as individuals.”
Amid the disappointment, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein emerged as a bright spot for the West Indies. Hosein’s four-wicket haul stood out as a testament to his skill and determination, even as his efforts fell short of altering the match’s outcome.
Reflecting on his personal achievement, Hosein offered a bittersweet perspective. “It is always good to get personal performances, but for me, if it is not helping the team get over the line, it is bittersweet.”

Despite the unrelenting challenges, Powell struck a hopeful tone as the team prepares for the fourth match of the series on Saturday. With pride and redemption on the line, the skipper emphasized the opportunity to turn things around. “England is a good team. We have two good games of cricket remaining, and Saturday provides us an opportunity to turn things around.”
